TDWI Checklist Report Helps Enterprises Build an Active Data Archive
New report explores the attributes of active data archiving, provides use cases, explains user best practices, and examines enabling technologies
SEATTLE, WA, May13, 2014—TDWI Research has released its newest Checklist Report, Active Data Archiving for Big Data, Compliance, and Analytics. The report examines the importance of active data archiving and provides best practices to help enterprises get started with their active data archiving initiative.
TDWI’s Philip Russom, the author of the report, explains that although data archiving processes exist today in some organizations, “these are rarely formalized or policy driven, such that data is archived in an ad hoc fashion (typically per application or per department) without an enterprise standard or strategy.”
The Checklist Report explores how a data archive can achieve a positive ROI by serving multiple uses and users from an online, active platform. The question is, how should an enterprise get started, and what best practices will ensure success?
Russom discusses the compelling reasons for improving data archives and describes the characteristics of effective, modern solutions. He discusses the role of data governance in a data archive and how such an archive addresses many compliance and regulatory issues. The report also explores what an analytics archive is and why enterprises should consider using one for critical, high-value, and aging analytics data.
Russom challenges organizations to rethink how their data is committed to an archive, to think of an archive as more than just a dumping ground for data.“Let’s be honest: We’ve all worked in organizations where archives were purely pro forma, without a credible effort to preserve data in a state that’s quickly or easily accessed by anyone,” Russom observes. He explains how to address the culture shock that many organizations face by focusing on key archiving goals.
In addition, the report:
- Describes the multiple storage and processing tiers used in active data archiving
- Details why security is so important in archives
- Discusses why enterprises should consider Hadoop as a highly scalable and low-cost storage platform
- Advises enterprises to consider economics as they select platforms, tools, and features of any archiving architecture
This research was sponsored by RainStor.
