Data governance has always been a journey, and the rise of generative and agentic AI is making that journey more complex. While TDWI research finds that many organizations have passed the midway point in establishing mature governance for structured data, unstructured data introduces far more complexity. Policies, metadata, and controls are uneven, and most enterprises are only beginning to treat unstructured content as a first-class citizen in governance programs. TDWI research shows that maturity in AI governance is even less advanced. Few organizations have well-defined practices for monitoring model behavior, managing model risk, or establishing accountability for AI-driven decisions.
