TDWI Top Trends | From Agentic to Autonomous Data Engineering: Five Trends Reshaping Data Work
October 16, 2026
Data engineers are the backbone of the modern data environment, building and maintaining pipelines that make trusted data available for analytics, AI, and business operations. As data volumes, sources, and use cases expand, data engineering teams are being asked to deliver more data, faster.
But much of data engineering remains labor-intensive. AI-assisted tools have made engineers more productive, but an engineer still generally initiates the work and must carry it through to completion. Now, new AI agents may allow engineers to delegate portions of the work rather than simply perform individual tasks faster.
As agents assume more of the implementation and operational work, organizations will need to reconsider what data engineering is intended to deliver. For instance, does the engineer’s role move toward defining outcomes, supplying business and technical context, setting the boundaries for agent action, and remaining accountable for results?
Download this report to examine five trends shaping that potential transition.
