Presentation: Data, Computation, and Analytics Over the Years
By Steve Miller

The focus of this talk will be a look at data, computation and intelligence over the years and how the current focus on data science influences data and analytics practitioners.  From the proprietary decision support systems of the early 1980s, through the emergence of the relational database, data warehouse, and business intelligence tools, and into the current era of open source and advanced analytics platforms - not only have tools matured, but so have the ways professionals and organizations are expected to deliver analytical solutions. The next generation Hadoop platforms, which for analytics are driven by Spark, will increasingly challenge large analytic database and business intelligence solutions, especially for data-driven companies. Just as decision support practitioners from the early 1980s started out with the SAS knowledge gained in grad school, so now practitioners working with the open source R and Python ecosystems they learn in school.

Presentation: While the Experts Debate, Applying Cognitive Computing to Today's Business as Usual  by Christopher Marcolis

In today’s fast paced and hyper competitive environment, it’s imperative that organizations use data and analytics to better understand their business and gain an advantage. Getting answers ASAP to pressing problems is a daily occurrence for many people whether in Marketing, Sales, Operations, or Finance. In this session, learn how Watson Analytics is breaking down barriers and making analytics more accessible to more users. See how Watson Analytics helped Christopher leverage data and conduct analysis that was typically the domain of professional analysts to organize and understand the valuation of a medical practice.  Visualizing answers to those questions without relying on others or waiting on lengthy and costly implementations, made the difference in negotiations!

Bios of Presenters

Steve Miller
Steve Miller's entire 35 year career has revolved on data, computation, and analytics. After earning bachelor's and master's degrees in quantitative methods/statistics, Steve started in the work world as a statistician and database developer at the University of Illinois Medical Center, followed by time building his consulting skills as a Principal at Oracle Consulting in Chicago.  His executive consulting management resume was honed at successful BI/analytics consultancies Braun Consulting, Piocon Technologies, and the current Inquidia Consulting. Steve enjoys programming and data science as much, if not more, than management.
Christopher Marcolis
Helping organizations to think differently-outside-the-box, is what Christopher is challenged with every day.  As one of the first Watson Analytics Evangelists at IBM, it's not just his role to promote a new breed of solutions, it's to nurture organizational transformation to cloud born analytics, to be unencumbered by traditional boundaries that prohibit decision makers from asking questions of their data, with natural language.  With over 15 years of experience in the analytics space, Christopher has lived on all sides of the equation as a customer, consumer, author, educator, administrator, consultant, and evangelist working in nearly every strategic public and private industry sector.
