Abstract
The Coming Deluge of Statistical Malfeasance
There is a deluge of statistical malfeasance heading this way. We are going to see many more statistics debacles, like those at AIG, Fannie Mae, Google, Fitch Ratings, Moody's, S&P Ratings, et al.
Also, corporations are going to miss countless opportunities to better understand their customers; to design smarter products; and to escape disrupted industries. For every one of these calamities that we observe, there will be countless others that go undetected.
This should be expected. We are in an information rush and we are becoming more dependent on getting the numbers right. We are performing more data analysis without markedly improving the one thing we need to efficiently and effectively wade through torrents of messy data—applied statistics.
This presentation will leverage case studies and ‘A Practitioner’s Guide To Business Analytics’ to discuss what is happening and how we can take our game to the next level. |

Randy Bartlett, Ph.D. CAP® PSTAT®, Blue Sigma Analytics
Randy Bartlett is a statistician/statistical data scientist with 20+ years of practice experience analyzing and reviewing data analysis; and leading business analytics teams. He is currently a Business Analytics Leader at Blue Sigma Analytics providing services for everything from strategic consulting for business analytics to data analysis and data management.
Randy designed 'A Practitioner’s Guide to Business Analytics' (McGraw-Hill, 2013) to be the foremost reference on how corporations can better implement business analytics and in this era of Big Data and the Internet of Things. He discusses strategic topics, including culture, organisation, planning, and leadership for business analytics and tactical topics such as Statistical Qualifications, Diagnostics, and Review; and Data Collection, Software, and Management.
Randy has previously contributed to the Encyclopedia for Research Design and writes blogs (including a series on Statistical Denial), case studies (AIG, AstraZeneca, big pharma, Google Flu Trends, et al.), and articles.
