To leverage the new wave of advanced data sources available, users and architects are turning to multiplatform data architectures (MDAs), where numerous diverse data platforms and tools are integrated in a multiplatform, distributed architecture. An MDA is typified by an extreme diversity of platform types that may include multiple brands of relational databases, NoSQL platforms, in-memory functions, and tools for data integration, analytics, and stream processing. Any of these may be on premises, in the cloud, or in hybrid combinations of the two.
The point of an MDA is to provide options for rapidly diversifying data and its business use. For example, as businesses deploy more sensors, customer channels, applications, and social media, the diversity of source data is driven up. In turn, relational and other structured data types are being joined with a widening range of multistructured and unstructured data types. As another example, businesses are diversifying the use of analytics, reports, and data-driven business monitoring, all of which have unique requirements for data capture, storage, and processing that drive up the diversity of data platforms and related tools.
MDAs are in production today by users in a wide range of industries and organizations of all sizes. Common business use cases are seen in the modern data warehouse environment, omnichannel marketing, the integrated supply chain, multimodule ERP, finance, and other enterprise data environments.
