Speaker Vanitha Lucas (CIBC) presents a difference by volunteering their skills and passion for data and analytics for the greater good. The “Data for Good” movement is becoming increasingly popular and many organizations, software vendors and educational institutions are leading, sponsoring or participating in projects.
Viz for Social Good (VFSG) works with mission driven non-profit organizations to analyze their data and create informative and beautiful data visualizations. VFSG has 34 chapters around the world with approx. 2,000 volunteers.
Attend this session to hear more about “Data for Good” and how organizations like Viz for Social Good are leading the way to use data in informatively visual ways to help non-profit organizations effect change around the world. |

Speaker Subrata Garai (Scotiabank). The exploratory analysis of healthcare and mortality data is an important research area, as it directly impacts the wellbeing of citizens. Even relatively simple techniques such as slicing and dicing existing data in new ways can yield remarkable insights.
Use cases and end state features contribute views of field of ‘outlier detection in multivariate space’. This presentation dives deeper to present an efficient outlier detection technique, termed SSS, which combines an iterative k-means algorithm with a searchlight based subset-scan. We apply this technique to identify outliers in two publicly available healthcare datasets from the New York Statewide Planning and Research Cooperative System, and California’s Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development. |

BIO - Vanitha Lucas considers herself to be a data and analytics philanthropist. Strongly believing in the power of data and analytics to serve the greater good; she is dedicating herself to raising awareness and influencing change on societal issues. Vanitha volunteers on the Board of Viz for Social Good and leads the Toronto chapter.
Vanitha has a wealth of experience developing IT and data strategies, delivering enterprise data management solutions and enabling business intelligence and analytics to drive business outcomes. She has led multi-national teams and work in verticals such as Marketing, Customer Experience, Customer Information Management, Fraud, AML, Risk, Finance and regulatory initiatives for OSFI and the US Federal Reserve. While her focus has been with Financial Services, she has also worked in Retail, Marketing and Government Ministries.

BIO - Subrata Garai is currently employed as Senior Data Scientist in Global Compliance and Monitoring program in Scotiabank. Apart from this responsibility, he is engaged with multiple Start-ups helping to shape up the Data Analytics Industry. He regularly publishes papers to IEEE on novel approaches in the field of Unsupervised Learning. He also teaches as a part time lecturer at University of Toronto School of Continuing Studies.
Coming from IT background, he has around 15 years experience mainly on financial industry – Insurance and Banking. He has also worked in Healthcare, Hospitality and Telecom sector. He helps businesses to take informed decisions based on solving their data science based problems. Specializing on Unsupervised Learning, his day-to-day work involves producing actionable insights from Industry sized Data as well as designing machine learning based products. His current focus is to bridge the gap between IT (Software) Design and ML/Data Analytics based solutions.
