Presentation: “See, Know, Act: How Visual Design Standards Improve Analytical Literacy” by Wayne Eckerson, Eckerson Group |
|
Abstract
The purpose of data visualization is not to hide the truth, but expose it, so business users quickly see what’s important and take action. Visual design standards create a common visual vocabulary throughout an organization, speeding business cognition and accelerating application development. The best visual standards embrace visualization best practices and ensure all applications conform to the same look, feel, and functional expressiveness.
You will learn how to:
- Apply best practices in visual display of quantitative information.
- Create visual design standards that accelerate development and maximize user adoption.
- Create a visual vocabulary for your organization.
- Develop visual standards that enable deeper, more rapid analytical insight and decisions.
- Leverage industry standards for visual design.
- Overcome limitations of your analytical tools in supporting a visual standard

Presentation: “Will the Data Lake Supplant the Traditional Data Warehouse?” by Peter Kim |
|
Abstract
The discussion about Big Data has been largely focused on the ability to use unstructured data, real time data, and larger volumes of data while utilizing open source tools to dramatically bring down cost. Lost is the real and immediate impacts that Data Lakes have on transforming the entire front funnel of the traditional data warehouse stack. A new generation of tools is enabling enterprise class ETL to and from the data lake with support for metadata, data lineage and data quality management. With these new tools, the investment in high performance data warehousing platforms can be fully leveraged for analytics and discovery, not on backend processing, reducing costs. Furthermore, it brings the "analytic sandbox" adjacent to (what we used to call) the ODS and integrates data profiling, getting new data enterprise ready faster, reducing your time to answers.
