How to Design a Data Lake with Business Impact in Mind

Webinar Speaker: Philip Russom, Senior Research Director for Data Management

Date: Tuesday, July 24, 2018

Time: 9:00 a.m. PT, 12:00 p.m. ET

Webinar Abstract

A quarter of organizations surveyed by TDWI in 2017 say they already have a data lake in production, while another quarter say their lake will be in production within 12 months. Although data lakes are still rather new, user organizations have adopted them briskly. Why has the data lake gotten so popular, so fast?

In the same survey, users say they built their data lakes for data-driven business practices, namely advanced analytics, data exploration, big data capture and leverage, data warehousing, and self-service data access. By focusing on these business requirements, users built data lakes that successfully deliver business impact.

Attendees will learn:

  • What business people and organizations need from a data lake for it to empower business impact, not just technical infrastructure
  • Which business requirements are the highest priority and how they are satisfied by specific technical capabilities, especially data labs, sandboxes, self-service, and other data exploration approaches
  • How some data lakes failed by ignoring key business requirements or omitting the technologies that support those
  • How business requirements deeply affect data lake design patterns and system architectures, plus how most lakes integrate tightly with data warehouses, analytics repositories, marketing campaign and channel data, and other enterprise data environments
  • Future-facing architectures for data lakes that involve clouds and object storage
