When a new technology or platform enters IT, we often see it applied first with operational applications and their servers. Then BI platforms and data warehouses adopt the new technology, followed by data management tools. We’ve seen this with various technologies, including Java and services. We’re now seeing the same sequence with clouds (whether public, private, or hybrid).
In fact, we’re at a stage in the life cycle of clouds where users are adopting data integration (DI) tools that are cloud-based. This makes sense for many DI use cases. For example, the fluid allocation of virtualized server resources that’s typical of a cloud lends itself to DI solutions, which tend to ramp up quickly (at scheduled moments) and conclude almost as suddenly. As DI dives deeper into big data, which itself is growing, capacity planning and tactical reactions to spikes in growth are greatly simplified by cloud computing. Many organizations are exchanging data across geographically dispersed business units and partnering firms, and a cloud can be a useful, neutral location for staging and processing B2B data. As the number and variety of clouds used by enterprises rises, DI tools and services will eventually become infrastructure pieces for integrating data across multiple forms of clouds, as well as traditional platforms.
Even so, there are challenges that cloud-based DI must address. Cloud offerings must allay user concerns about the security, privacy, governance, and compliance of their data. Cloud-based DI tools and solutions must prove that they support mature DI functions, especially numerous interface types and productive development environments. And cloud DI must show that it can straddle many worlds, including new cloud-based ones, Web applications, mature client-server environments, and older legacy platforms. After all, none of these will go away; but they are certainly being joined by clouds.
