Presentation: New Visualization Techniques for Complex Data
Gunar Carlsson - Co-founder of Ayasdi Inc.
Todd Stewart - Vice President for Clinical Integration at Mercy Health

Sometimes the relationships in the data you have are too complex for traditional visualization techniques. Straight lines, histograms, and spider charts can’t always capture the nuances of variation or the underlying nature of the patterns in the data. Topological data analysis has been very successful in discovering information in many large data sets across a variety of industries.  Mercy and Ayasdi have been using topological data analysis to quickly understand the patterns and variations in clinical care that lead to the best patient outcomes and experiences. The effectiveness of this data visualization technique has cut in half the amount of time required by clinical experts to design optimal pathways. This session will explain what topological data analysis is and how it’s being used to address some key healthcare challenges.

10:00 – 10:30

Break and Networking

10:30 – 11:45

Presentation: Advanced Analytics at Express Scripts
Christopher Lehmuth
Senior Director, Enterprise Advanced Analytics at Express Scripts

Christopher Lehmuth will describe data solutions in the healthcare space that provide valuable, actionable insights.  There will be an overview of the advanced analytic development process, advantages, challenges, and how to educate business partners and clients on the nuance of probabilistic scoring.  To illustrate this, Chris will provide high level case reviews of how they’ve applied advanced analytic solutions at ESI (internally and for clients)

Bio of Presenter

Gunar Carlsson
Gunnar Carlsson is a mathematician who specializes in topology, the mathematical study of shape.  He has taught at University of Chicago, University of California (San Diego), Princeton University, and since 1991 at Stanford University.  He has spoken at the International Congress of Mathematicians, the annual meeting of the American Mathematical Society, the annual meeting of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, and has delivered the Rademacher, Wing, and Pitcher distinguished lectures series.  His work began in the pure parts of the subject, but over the last fifteen years he has devoted his energies to developing topology as an applied discipline, via funding from the National Science Foundation, the Office of Naval Research, Air Force Office of Scientific Research, and ultimately leading a major multiuniversity DARPA initiative on the applications of topology to data science.  In 2008 he cofounded Ayasdi Inc. jointly with students and collaborators from the DARPA project, to commercialize the techniques developed there.
