When Business and IT Align: A Recipe for Agility
For some, it’s a culture question. IT is typecast by other employees as a bastion of geeks who are a culture apart. IT professionals, for their part, often characterize business folk, especially those in sales and marketing, as brutish and disingenuous. For others, culture is not a factor. For them, the demands on both sides of the fence pit teams against one another. Business folks need things done ASAP in order to conduct their roles, while IT is beset with the burden of doing more with less and is barely able to keep up with the high demands of simply keeping systems running. Still others believe that something more nefarious is in play, that IT’s main role is "command and control," and that it uses governance to be the team that always says no.

Each of these perspectives has both kernels of truth and heaps of exaggeration. But no matter the cause of this divide, we know one thing for sure: it persists, and it creates inefficiencies in the organization.

In this presentation, attendees will learn:

  • Why don’t organizations have alignment between business and IT?
  • What marks the broken conversation between IT and business?
  • How do we recognize that these issues impede progress and reduce agility?
  • Are there better way to implement analytical environments?
  • How do we work with the other side to find solutions that simultaneously enable and liberate?
  • How do we create a strong foundation?

Reducing the schism between business and IT is paramount if the organization is to gain agility. Put differently, the more business and IT converge, the better chance an organization has to be innovative and fleet-footed.

Customer Story:  Waggle

How do you turn non-data people into data fueled decision makers? That's the task that Waggle—a smart learning platform for grades 2-8—set out to solve. Users of Waggle include both teachers and students; students use it to complete coursework and teachers for tracking student development. The goal of Waggle is to empower teachers to quickly identify which students were struggling, determine the specific subject areas that are problematic, and be able to easily prescribe tailored coursework based on that information. This ambitious goal required an interface that allowed non-technical, non-analyst users (grade school teachers) to intuitively consume and act on the data generated by Waggle. With infrastructure and data set up in AWS, the last step was finding a reporting and analytics platform to power the intended data experience. Of critical importance was that the BI tool could be seamlessly integrated into the application UX. Join us to learn how Waggle used embedded BI with TIBCO Jaspersoft to provide actionable data to their non-data users and build an award-winning application.
