As organizations seek to utilize higher volumes of more diverse data, data delivery and integration have become more important than ever. ETL (extract, transform, and load) rose to prominence in the 1980s when data warehouses became popular. ETL provided a well-established set of steps for delivering data to the data warehouse. Data was first extracted from source systems, then transformed before being loaded into the data warehouse.
A new model, ELT (extract, load, and transform), has become popular over the past few years as cloud platforms have become more important. Here, data is loaded to the cloud platform before it is transformed. This method “pushes down” processing of the data to use the computing power of the cloud.
So, which method is better? The reality is that there are pros and cons of each. Join TDWI and Matillion as they discuss the practical differences.
You will learn about:
- Trends leading to the rise of ELT
- Differences between ETL and ELT in practice
- Considerations for ETL and ELT use in modern platforms
