Keeping Data Usable in a Consumer Data Privacy World

Webinar Speaker: Evan Levy, TDWI Faculty Member and Consultant

Time: 9:00 a.m. PT, 12:00 p.m. ET

The world of consumer data privacy has undergone a seismic shift. Regardless of geography or industry, data protection has become a corporate responsibility. Although consumer protection laws vary across countries, the introduction of the EU’s Global Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) caused a shift in government policy across the world. Nearly every country has updated their data protection laws, and in the U.S., most states have updated their consumer information laws or have legislation pending. This has caused most companies to examine their customer data usage and protection practices.

The challenges of data protection aren’t confined to compliance and regulations; they also include establishing an approach that addresses the varying uses and movement of data across, within, and outside a company. The data user audience isn’t limited to badged employees in a single location; the last year has illustrated the need for supporting data access across a distributed workforce, multiple business geographies, trading partners, and even customers.

The key challenge in addressing data protection is maintaining usage flexibility while implementing rigorous protection and allowing team members to access data for operations, analytics, data science, and new innovations and applications to deliver business value. It’s about protecting data in a manner that’s rigorous without changing the way that team members do their jobs. Software vendors have responded to these challenges by delivering a more robust set of data governance and data protection functions natively within their platforms.

In this presentation, Evan Levy will review common data protection techniques and approaches for protecting customer data. Alex Gutow, Snowflake’s director of product marketing, will also review the new data protection and data governance capabilities available with the Snowflake Data Cloud and how they’re enabling companies to securely share and collaborate with data in new ways.
