Squeeze Every Drop of Business Value from Your Data Lake

Webinar Speaker: Philip Russom, Senior Research Director for Data Management

Date: Tuesday, December 11, 2018

Time: 9:00 a.m. PT, 12:00 p.m. ET

Webinar Abstract

TDWI’s recent data lake survey reveals that a quarter of organizations canvassed already have a data lake in production, while another quarter will deploy a lake within twelve months. The same survey showed that users have multiple options for data lake platforms, including relational databases, Hadoop, cloud, or a hybrid mix of these.

Regardless of your planning stage, maturity level, or platform choice for a data lake, you need to consider how to get the most business value from it. In most organizations, for a data lake to be considered successful, it must satisfy the business requirements of key use cases. In particular, end users expect a lake to enable advanced analytics and self-service data-driven practices, but in an environment that is governed in a trusted way.

Data catalogs contribute significantly to the ease, precision, and productivity of analytics, self-service, and governance, especially with modern data platforms such as data lakes and clouds.

This webinar will discuss:

  • How a catalog can serve as an inventory of data in a lake (and other data ecosystems) for new analytics correlations, self-service data exploration, and high-value data-driven operations
  • How a data catalog helps analysts and similar users find the right data quickly to accelerate the development of analytics
  • How a catalog can be an accessible and governed foundation for all self-service data practices, from data prep to data visualization
  • How a catalog or glossary can define business entities within data in a consistent manner that is conducive to data governance, data standards, master data management, and more
  • How all the above data catalog practices make a data lake useable, compliant, trusted, and business-driven, and how they prevent a lake from deteriorating into a swamp
