Webinar Abstract
By many industry estimates, close to 80 percent of the data collected by organizations is textual and most is written in natural language, which makes it extremely difficult to quantify and analyze by typical BI and analytics approaches. This “unstructured” data is everywhere—and it is growing rapidly. It comes from internal sources such as emails, company documents, log files, call center notes, claims forms, and surveys as well as external sources such as Tweets, blogs, and online news. It also includes images, audio files, and other formats. There’s a wealth of information contained in this data, but its sheer volume and complexity make it a challenge to leverage. TDWI sees that those organizations that analyze all their data, including the unstructured content, are more likely to measure tangible business value from analytics than those that do not.
If your organization isn’t analyzing this treasure trove of data, it should be. TDWI research surveys find that although a majority of organizations might be collecting non-numeric data, only about 30 percent of organizations are actually analyzing it. Why? Often organizations believe they don’t have the tools or skills in place to process and analyze this disparate data. The good news is that some vendors are incorporating tools and techniques for processing and analyzing text and other complex forms of data into their analytics platforms and making them easier to use.
