Modern Data Warehouse Integration: Bringing Data Together in the Cloud

TDWI Speaker: David Loshin, President of Knowledge Integrity

Date: Tuesday, March 6, 2018

Time: 9:00 a.m. PT, 12:00 p.m. ET

Webinar Abstract

As more organizations leverage hosted data warehouse environments and cloud-based reporting and analytics services, the challenges of data integration become more acute. In the past, data integration was straightforward: most of the data that flowed into the data warehouse originated well within the corporate firewall. Today, however, there is an increasingly varying mix of data sources, including on-premises data systems, cloud-based databases, and externally-produced third-party data, as well as data sourced from software-as-a-service (SaaS) environments. The diversity of these sources contributes to growing complexity in bringing the data together; different data refresh rates, streaming cadences, and timing differences confound conventional staging and bulk load processes, leading to increased operational efforts at best, and inconsistent results at worst.

However, we are well-positioned to adopt modern alternatives to conventional extract/load/transform (ELT) by leveraging the capabilities of cloud-built data warehouses. It is time to bring data together in the cloud. Instead of having a separate staging area and loading the data, consider using the database itself as a platform for integration and shifting the processing to a cloud-built data warehouse. In this webinar, we contrast the traditional ELT approaches of the past with the agile approaches enabled by high-performance cloud-based systems. Attendees will learn about:

  • Adapting data streaming instead of daily bulk loading
  • Enabling near real-time ELT with cloud-built, scalable data warehouse environments
  • Leveraging transient utility computing to separate computation from data warehouse storage to reduce costs while speeding time to value
