TDWI Checklist Report | Preparing for the Next-Generation Cloud Data Architecture
May 25, 2021
Data architectures to support reporting, business intelligence, and analytics have evolved dramatically over the past 10 years.
Organizations have shifted their focus away from the monolithic on-premises data warehouse, at first adopting distributed computing and storage platforms, then data lakes to complement the data warehouse. Recently, many organizations migrated their data and application workloads to cloud object stores.
Although the infrastructure evolution provides a path for organizations to adopt cost-efficient, scalable, high-performance computing environments, it doesn’t happen overnight. Organizations execute incremental changes, leading to a more complex hybrid environment spanning on-premises legacy systems and multiple cloud environments.
Instead of considering the data warehouse and the data lake as independent “data islands” that coexist in a cloud platform, it is time to reconsider the fundamental ways that information is accumulated, managed, and then provisioned to the different downstream data consumers.
This TDWI Checklist discusses the transition to a modernized data architecture, examining the decision making around this transition and the steps to best take advantage of this modernized environment.
