TDWI Announces New Research Leadership

Fern Halper, advanced analytics expert and thought leader, joins TDWI as a co-director of its respected research program.

SEATTLE, WA, January 8, 2013—TDWI is pleased to announce the hire of Fern Halper as Director of TDWI Research for Advanced Analytics. She joins Philip Russom, Director of TDWI Research for Data Management, and David Stodder, Director of TDWI Research for Business Intelligence, in leading the research division of TDWI (tdwi.org).

“Advanced analytics is emerging as a major field of interest and opportunity for business intelligence practitioners across industries,” Halper said. “It’s clear that ‘big data’ is here to stay, and it isn’t just for big companies anymore. With so much data available to mine and analyze, more and more enterprises are looking for ways to glean insight and make a real impact on the way they make decisions, run their operations, and ultimately, increase their profitability. I look forward to joining the TDWI Research team as they continue to empower their audience to benefit from BI and advanced analytics.”

Dr. Fern Halper has more than 20 years of experience in data analysis, business analysis, and strategy development. She was recently a partner at industry analyst firm Hurwitz & Associates, where she focused on advanced analytics. Halper also spent eight years at AT&T Bell Labs leading the development of innovative approaches and systems to analyze marketing and operational data. She has directed strategy and product line planning for Lucent's Internet Software Unit. Halper received her BA from Colgate University and earned her Ph.D. in the data-intensive field of oceanography from Texas A&M University. She has taught at Bentley College and Colgate University.

Halper is a recognized expert in the field of analytics and was one of the first analysts to write about text analytics. She has published hundreds of reports and articles on data mining and information technology, and is frequently quoted on the subject in the press. Halper has also co-authored several “Dummies” books on these subjects, including cloud computing, hybrid cloud, service-oriented architecture, and service management. She is currently completing Big Data for Dummies, to be published in April 2013.

Now with TDWI Research, Halper will focus on providing original, research-based insight and best practices recommendations for organizations implementing advanced analytics, from text mining, social media, and predictive analytics as well as customer analysis, profiling, and segmentation. She will also address advanced information technologies for big data, including cloud computing and service management, and develop self-assessment tools for enterprises that wish to benchmark their capabilities.

“We’re thrilled that Fern is joining TDWI Research as we continue to expand our offerings,” said Rich Zbylut, president of TDWI. “TDWI started in the realm of data warehousing and grew along with the exploding practice of business intelligence. Now with the big data deluge, we’re embarking into the realm of the data scientist. With Fern’s deep knowledge of analytics and data modeling, TDWI will continue to cover all the information bases—from basics to advanced approaches—in keeping with our mission to be the premier resource for all things BI/DW.”
