Fireside Chat: Baselining the State of Spatial Data Science

Webinar Speaker: James Kobielus, Senior Research Director, Data Management

Date: Tuesday, May 2, 2023

Time: 9:00 a.m. PT / 12:00 p.m. ET

Spatial data science has become a mainstream enterprise practice. Building on and extending the capabilities of geographic information systems, this sophisticated discipline focuses on understanding not only where events take place but also why they’re occurring and what’s likely to happen in the future.

Spatial data scientists build machine learning, predictive analytics, and other analytical models to find trends, patterns, and other useful insights in location data. New analytical tools, libraries, collaboration environments, and cloud data services enable them to develop sophisticated applications for a wide range of enterprise use cases.

Join TDWI senior research director James Kobielus and invited guests in a fireside chat to baseline the state of spatial data science. They will examine the following issues:

  • What are the principal use cases of spatial data science in the enterprise?
  • What kinds of insights should spatial data scientists be extracting from enterprise data?
  • What are the core tools, libraries, and platforms required by spatial data scientists?
  • What are the essential skills, training, and certifications to be an enterprise spatial data scientist?
  • How should spatial data scientists be using artificial intelligence, deep learning, and machine learning tools in their work?
  • What are the most challenging aspects of acquiring, modeling, and analyzing geospatial data?
  • How should enterprises be staffing, training, and organizing their spatial data science teams?
  • How difficult is it to find and hire data scientists with expertise in spatial data analysis?
  • What are the essential elements of a mature enterprise practice of spatial data science?
  • How should enterprises invest in order to future-proof their spatial data science practices?
  • What are the ethics, sustainability, and responsible governance implications of spatial data science?

Guest Speakers

Matthew Forrest
VP of Spatial Data Science
CARTO

Matthew Forrest is the VP of spatial data science at CARTO and is passionate about using and sharing ideas around modern GIS, helping others to use a variety of new tools in their geospatial workflows. Matthew graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a degree in geography and has been working with GIS and in geospatial for 11 years, the past 7 at CARTO.

He has worked with businesses and governments of all sizes and scales, and he enjoys helping others advance their GIS careers.

Philip David Cooper (MBA, MSc (Hons), BSc)
Geospatial Global Lead for the Aerospace and Satellite Division
AWS

Philip David Cooper is an established business and technical professional in the technology sector supporting growth of and use of satellite, space, and cloud technology. He has worked in the large aerospace industry at Airbus and went on to build earth observation and geospatial business SterlingGeo over 8 years.

Today, Phil is the geospatial global lead for the Aerospace and Satellite Division of AWS for EMEA. Having worked at AWS for nearly 4 years in the Ground Station team and then the EMEA A&S team, Phil now supports our geospatial customers globally building on cloud, across the space domain. With Earth observation and geospatial data creation accelerating for new customers and partners, Phil is bringing an understanding of what AWS has to offer to the geospatial community.
