As organizations look to advance their analytics and applications strategies and capture and analyze more diverse data types, they are often moving to cloud platforms to help. According to TDWI research, the adoption of cloud data warehouses and cloud data lakes is already mainstream. Our recent surveys have indicated that the gap between the adoption of on-premises warehouses and cloud data warehouses is shrinking. Why? The cloud provides a scalable, flexible environment for data of all types.
Although the cloud provides many benefits, there are also challenges. At TDWI, we hear a lot about issues including cloud data integration and data governance. Additionally, issues that have always plagued data management (such as data mastering and data quality) are challenges even in the cloud, and they need to be taken seriously.

Andy Palmer

Andy Palmer specializes in founding and accelerating the growth of innovative technology organizations. His unique blend of strategic perspective, disciplined execution, and world-class network enables him to deliver successful outcomes in situations where expectations are high and uncertainty is the rule rather than the exception. Andy has a particular interest in projects at the intersection of computer science and the life sciences and a specific passion for improving primary care with consumer-driven health technologies.
Most recently, Andy co-founded Tamr with longtime partners and renowned database researchers Michael Stonebraker, Ph.D., and Ihab Ilyas, Ph.D., based on their research at MIT in the Data-Tamer Project. Tamr enables enterprises to connect and leverage all their data as an asset and is backed by more than $85 million in financing led by New Enterprise Associates and Google Ventures. Previously, Andy was co-founder and CEO of big data pioneer Vertica Systems (acquired by HP) and currently serves on the board of directors of Enterprise DB. In 2020, Andy was recognized as the Entrepreneur of the Year by Ernst & Young.
During his career as an entrepreneur, Andy has served as founder, founding investor, board member, or advisor to more than 60 start-up companies across a variety of industries. In early 2012, Andy founded Koa Labs, a seed fund for first-time entrepreneurs focused primarily on backing women and immigrants. Koa’s portfolio includes such industry-leading companies as Upstart (NASDAQ: UPST), PillPack (acquired by Amazon), Recorded Future, and Kinsa. In 2013 Andy was recognized as Angel Investor of the year by the New England Venture Capital Association.
Prior to founding Koa, Andy exercised his interest in the life sciences by serving as the global head of software and data engineering at Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (NIBR). Previously, Andy served as a member of the start-up team and senior vice president of operations and CIO at Infinity Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: INFI). In 2004, Andy was recognized by CIO Magazine as a “Top 100 CIO.”
In the past, Andy held executive positions and served as a member of the core start-up teams at Bow Street (acquired by IBM), pcOrder.com (NASDAQ: PCOR), and Trilogy. Andy earned his MBA with focus on entrepreneurship from the Amos Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College in 1994 and his undergraduate degrees in English, history, and computer science from Bowdoin College in 1988. Andy lives in Harvard Square in Cambridge, MA, and has four adult children: Gerry, Morgan, Jonah, and Annie. Outside of business and technology, Andy’s passions include rugby, fly fishing, and scuba diving.
Evren Eryurek

Evren Eryurek, Ph.D., is the leader of data analytics and data management portfolio of Google Cloud, covering streaming analytics, Dataflow, Beam, messaging (pub/sub and confluent Kafka), data governance, data catalog and discovery, and data marketplace as the director of product management.
He joined Google Cloud as the technical director in the CTO Office of Google Cloud, leading Google Cloud and its efforts towards industrial enterprise solutions. Google Cloud established the CTO Office and is still building a team of the world’s foremost experts on cloud computing, analytics, AI, and machine learning to work with global companies as trusted advisors and partners. Evren joined Google as the first external member to take a leadership role as a technical director within the CTO Office of Google Cloud.
Prior to joining Google, he was the SVP and software chief technology officer for GE Healthcare, a near-$20 billion segment of GE. GE Healthcare is a global leader in delivering healthcare clinical, business, and operational solutions with its medical equipment, information technologies, life sciences, and service technologies covering settings from physician offices to integrated delivery networks. Evren began his GE career at GE Transportation, where he served as general manager of the software and solutions business.
Evren was with Emerson Process Management group for over 11 years, where he held several leadership positions and was responsible for developing new software-based growth technologies for process control systems and field devices, coordinating cross-divisional product execution and implementation.
A graduate of the University of Tennessee, Evren holds a master’s and doctorate degree in nuclear engineering. Evren holds over 60 US patents.
