Dangerous Assumptions About Data
Michael Scofield-Asst. Professor-Loma Linda University, CA

When approaching a new dataset (either from inside your organization, or newly-imported from some external source) the tabular structure of much of the data we see deludes us into making all kinds of assumptions about the structure, quality, and meaning of the data.  Some of those assumptions may be unwarranted.
This presentation goes through about 30 common assumptions about data quality, consistency, meaning, and structure and how to test those assumptions.  Assumptions include the lack of duplicate records (really?) which requires we define what we mean by “duplicate”.
These tool-neutral techniques can be performed with your in-house query languages or even in spreadsheet software.  The point is to recognize the assumptions you are making, and test them.
We then go through a newly-developed taxonomy of data behavior and quality to organize our observations.  We name specific characteristics of data at the cell, column, row, table, database level as well as characteristics of aggregated, normalized, and integrated information, and finally qualities of information delivery.

Balancing Governance and Self Service without Compromise
Josh Good – Director of Product Marketing, Qlik

All too often governance and self-service are talked about as two opposing forces with IT focused on governance and the business focused on self-service. This traditional thinking is being modernized due to visual analytics platforms. Through a combination of technologies and new perspectives, businesses are becoming the champions of governance and IT are becoming the champions of self-service. Learn why this is happening and what it takes to make the change to have governed self-service without compromise.
