Deeper analytics are now a normal part of shaping everyday life. Customers are expecting a personalized experience from shopping online to health care. New algorithms are being built on a daily basis. With all the explosion of insights, this session is focused on taking a step back to look at the question – Just because we can, should we? In the context of data and analytics.    

We will dedicate this session to having three different points of views on data ethics and technology. Followed by a panel discussion.

Bios of Presenters

Neil Raden
President and Founder, Hired Brains
Neil is the President and founder of Hired Brains, a research and consulting firm and a hands-on practitioner in many areas related to Business Intelligence and Advanced Analytics. He is on the advisory boards of TDWI and Sandia National Laboratory. The recurrent theme in his work is the transformative effect of rationally devised information systems for people.

Neil is an author and source for journals such as Information Week, Intelligent Enterprise, Business Intelligence Review, DM Review, Computerworld, InfoWorld, eWeek, Business Week, and Forbes, and a contributing author to Planning and Designing the Data Warehouse (Prentice Hall, 1996). He is the author of dozens of sponsored white papers for vendors and other organizations (available at http://www.hiredbrains.com/knowout.html).

Emily Wyatt, Ph.D
Manager, SapientRazorfish
Emily Wyatt, Ph.D. currently runs both quantitative and qualitative user experience research projects for clients of SapientRazorfish and Publicis NA. She earned a Ph.D. in Cognitive Psychology from the University of Chicago (’11), having focused her studies on the complex interplay of mind and biology within the realm of communication. As a social scientist who applies machine learning algorithms to human-generated data sets, Emily takes great interest in the ethics of data collection, data ownership, and emerging technologies. She is new to the Research Triangle area, having hopped around from Chicago to San Francisco before settling here this past year.  
Alex Meadows
Lead Data Engineer @ Syngenta

Alex Meadows is a Lead Data Engineer at Syngenta, part of an awesome team building a next generation data solutions.  He has a keen interest in working with open source technologies.  Taking his experiences from various industries, his goal is to build solutions that answer not only the client's current questions, but also the questions they don't know to ask yet.  

He has a MBA in Business Intelligence from Saint Joseph's University and a Bachelors in Business Administration from Chowan University.  Hobbies include:  writing, table-top roleplaying, board and video games, and working on improving his patio garden.
