TDWI Upside - Where Data Means Business

Data Stories: Internet and Computer Use Across Demographics

Which groups are online more, where more people have computers, and what different groups do online.

Who’s Online Now?

The latest data from the Pew Research Center indicates that 26 percent of U.S. adults are online almost all the time. College-educated adults and non-rural residents, among other groups, are more likely to report frequent Internet use.

Computers Are Still Not Universal

To be online, you need a computer or a mobile device. Overall, almost 90 percent of U.S. households have a computer, but the rate varies notably by state, as mapped here.

What Website Are You Looking At?

Each person’s Internet habits are unique, but some websites are more or less popular among different groups. Only half of major websites are included in this set of charts broken down by demographic from Priceonomics, but there are still some interesting overall patterns.
