The combination of a cost-effective approach to utility/service computing with the ability to provide scalable storage platforms for the acquisition and ingestion of growing data volumes is motivating many organizations to “modernize” their data warehouses by migrating them to the cloud. However, there are limitations to the benefits that can be derived by replicating the same data warehouse architecture on a cloud-based server cluster. When the data warehouse is not designed to exploit key features of the cloud environment and cloud-based services, the system will still be inhibited in terms of scalability and performance yet will continue to demand staff resources for maintenance, management, and optimization.
In this webinar, we will examine the challenges that data engineers may face when migrating their on-premises data warehouse architecture to a cloud platform, especially in supporting service-level agreements. We will then review architectural features that the cloud platform provides and examine how those features, when exploited in the right way, can help the information management practitioner truly renovate and modernize their data warehouse environment. Finally, we will contrast traditional data warehouse approaches with data warehouses that are designed to take advantage of cloud services.
Attendees will learn about:
- Addressing dynamic scaling and elasticity to meet performance and concurrency demands
- Key features of cloud-based platforms for data warehousing
- Opportunities for leveraging a cloud provider’s array of services
- Differentiating between conventional databases and ones designed for the cloud
- Considerations for data warehouse modernization
