Dean Abbott is cofounder and chief data scientist of Smarter HQ, Inc. He is an internationally recognized data mining and predictive analytics expert and conference speaker, with over two decades of experience applying advanced algorithms to real-world problems in behavioral marketing, customer acquisition and attrition, risk modeling, and fraud detection. He has deployed models on or taught courses using nearly every top predictive analytics commercial or open source software product.

Mr. Abbott is the author of Applied Predictive Analytics (Wiley 2014) and co-author of IBM SPSS Modeler Cookbook (Packt Publishing 2013), an advisory board member of the University of California at Irvine predictive analytics certificate program, and a regular program committee member for the KDD conference industrial track.

John Akred is the Chief Technology Officer of Silicon Valley Data Science, and has over 15 years of experience in advanced analytical solutions and analytical system architectures. He is a recognized expert in the areas of applied business analytics, machine learning, predictive analytics, and operational data mining. He has successfully delivered applications using various architectural approaches—from stream processing, in-database analytics, complex event processing, and emerging distributed non-relational data platforms (NoSQL) to real-time scoring, real-time optimization, event-driven architectures, and other applications of analytics—at scale.

Mr. Akred has architected systems incorporating NoSQL as well as traditional approaches such as Hadoop, Cassandra, HBase, Riak, Oracle, and SQL Server. He has also designed operational solutions based on predictive analytics implemented in Greenplum, SAS, SPSS, and MATLAB. Mr. Akred has held senior positions as Chief Architect of the Big Data practice at Accenture and Senior Manager of the Emerging Data Platforms group at Accenture Technology Labs. He has worked with clients from the US Postal Service to Xcel Energy. Prior to Accenture, he was a Solution Architect at SPSS and a Senior Research Analyst with the Chicago Board Options Exchange.

Natasha Balac, Ph.D.

Natasha Balac, Ph.D.

Natasha Balac received her master's and Ph.D. in computer science from Vanderbilt University with an emphasis in data mining from large data sets. Her dissertation focused on creating and applying novel data mining techniques to mobile robots and real-time sensor data. She has been with the University of California at San Diego since 2003, initially with the San Diego Supercomputer Center and currently with the CalIT2/Qualcomm Institute. Previously, she worked on data mining, analytics, and bioinformatics in the biotech industry.

She has also led multiple collaborations across a wide range of organizations in industry, government, and academia. She has led the Predictive Analytics Center of Excellence and collaborated for the last five years on a number of government and research projects in the areas of analytics and visualization, including with the NSF, NIH, NASA, CPUC, Smart Grid, and Smart City.

Dr. Balac founded and serves as the president and CEO of Data Insight Discovery, Inc. DID’s charter is enabling businesses to discover actionable insight from vast amounts of data.

Will Henry is owner of Henry Analytics, a data-science consulting company. Currently, he is primarily working with an early-stage business analytics start-up. He was formerly director of data science at Riskpulse Inc, a cutting-edge predictive analytics company in the logistics and supply chain sectors. Will is also a Python instructor with the University of California, Irvine, Division of Continuing Education.
