IBM’s $1.7 billion acquisition of Netezza is the second major DW-related acquisition this year, following EMC’s purchase of analytic database specialist Greenplum this summer. Netezza effectively inaugurated the DW appliance segment: forming in 2001, launching in 2003, going public in 2007, and turning a profit in 2008.
