Self-service business intelligence (BI), data discovery, and visual analytics technologies have revolutionized the user experience with data. Before, users were fortunate to get canned reports from enterprise BI systems or even just “data dumps” that they would put into their spreadsheets. More advanced business analysts and power users could work with online analytical processing (OLAP) tools, but were still dependent on IT for data management and know-how. The self-service world has untethered users from centralized IT and enterprise BI, and users have accomplished exciting things. Users want to do even more with personalized visualization, analytics, and collaboration.
However, the trend toward user self-service has made it more difficult for IT to accomplish critical enterprise responsibilities including governance, data stewardship, and managing overall data access and performance. Many organizations are growing concerned that a “wild west” exists in their midst and would like to see a more secure, “managed” self-service experience that includes governance and stewardship of trusted data. In addition, on their own many users are frustrated with self-service because they lack the skills and training to work effectively with data. They need guidance that IT could provide.
