Agile development methods originated to speed up the development of code-laden procedural logic for operational and transactional applications that automate a business process. Applying a similar methodology to make data integration more agile has severe challenges. That’s because DI development involves many time-consuming but required tasks, such as translating business requirements into specifications, getting approval to access source systems, profiling source data, improving and documenting metadata and master data, developing data transformations based on specifications, deploying interfaces, modeling data for target systems, and assuring authoritative and trustworthy data. Furthermore, DI work must comply with agreed-upon standards for data models, cross-system interfaces, architecture, governance, and stewardship. One way to accelerate this long list of DI tasks is to base data provisioning on a service-based approach.
