Data Warehouse Packages: Quick, Mature, and Extensible
Do you need a new data warehouse (DW) and business intelligence (BI) solution? Perhaps this will be your organization’s first solution. Or maybe it’s a replacement for a system that’s reached the end of its lifecycle. Regardless of your situation, there are many good reasons for considering a vendor-built packaged solution for DW or BI. A pre-built DW package deploys quickly, so the business gets value from it sooner than with a home-grown or a mixed-vendor solution.
A good package will be feature-rich with many built-in dimensional data models, reports, and analyses, which means you’ll quickly achieve a level of maturity that would take you many months or years to achieve yourself. A good DW package will also be open and extensible, so that—when you’re ready—you can customize its built-in components and build new BI solutions atop it. In addition, a DW package helps you avoid risky and time-consuming system integration work, learn how a quality DW is designed, and drive toward consensus (e.g., the package defines customer so you don’t have to).
