Peering under the hood of most organizations' application infrastructure reveals a variety of off-the-shelf tool suites, proprietary products, home-grown applications, and hundreds, if not thousands of desktop data assets such as spreadsheets, documents, and presentations. And although consolidating master data into a unified view will ultimately yield significant benefits in terms of reduced complexity and high quality data, many initiatives fail to launch due to missed expectations, delays in deployment, and difficulty in migration and integration. An effective master data management program begins with an assessment and understanding of the reliance of critical business processes on common information objects to help develop a reasonable strategy for requirements gathering, enterprise master object modeling, and business application migration and integration. In this talk we look at approaches currently being undertaken for how enterprise data requirements analysis dovetails with business process modeling to highlight which data entities are ripe for master data consolidation and how that process informs the enterprise application architecture.
