Emerging Best Practices in Cloud Data Architecture

July 21, 2020

Philip Russom, Ph.D.

Senior Research Director

TDWI

Recent surveys from TDWI show that the average user organization will manage more data on the cloud than on premises within three years. Some organizations have already passed this important milestone. Cloud has become the preferred platform for operational applications, and it will soon be the preferred platform for analytics and other data-driven practices.

Most organizations adopting cloud for their analytics data already have mature data platforms, data warehouses, data lakes, and other data assets on premises. This explains the recent increase in project types for data migration to the cloud and “replatforming” (moving from older on-premises data platforms to newer ones on the cloud).

Moving data, platforms, warehouses, and lakes to the cloud forces change in data architectures for these large data ecosystems. This is especially apparent when large-scale architectures go “hybrid” by distributing related data across multiple on-premises and cloud platforms. Emerging best practices for cloud data architectures have much in common with older architectural practices, yet they introduce new design patterns as well.

This talk will draw from TDWI Research reports to canvass the trends and best practices of cloud data architecture, with a focus on hybrid data architectures, plus use cases in data warehousing, data integration, and advanced analytics. The point is to help business and technology people plan their journey to the cloud, plus provide guidance for the cloud data architectures they will build, maintain, and use daily for business advantage.
