Balancing Data Governance with User Empowerment and Business Objectives: Research Trends and Directions

April 6, 2022

Prerequisite: None

David Stodder

Senior Research Director

Organizations want to empower users to explore and analyze new data so they can apply insights to all kinds of business decisions. Many also want to be customer-centric and draw on an array of customer data sources for complete views of preferences, influences, and patterns. Yet goals for self-service user empowerment and customer-centricity often run headlong into concerns about data governance and compliance. Finding the right balance is difficult.

Fortunately, technology trends are enabling organizations to address pressures on data governance and compliance. This presentation will draw on TDWI research to examine how organizations can achieve a good balance between empowering users and ensuring that they meet data governance and compliance priorities.

Topics to be discussed include:

  • The role of data governance for improving overall trust in the data, which is vital to self-service empowerment
  • Data governance amid rapid changes in data management and architecture such as virtual data fabrics, data mesh, cloud data lakehouses, data marketplaces, and adoption of DevOps and DataOps
