Data Visualization and Storytelling: Finding and Communicating Data Insights

A TDWI Certificate Track

Virtual Classroom
May 8–10, 2023
9:00am – 5:00pm CT

David Langer

Dave on Data

This three-day data visualization and storytelling virtual seminar is designed to build the skills you need to find insights in data, visualize them appropriately, and communicate your discoveries for maximum business impact.

Growing audiences are turning to data to drive smarter decisions, and many businesses are expanding data access through self-service programs. But access to data does not guarantee success. This three-day program is designed to build the skills you need to find insights in data, visualize them appropriately, and communicate your discoveries for maximum business impact.

TDWI experts will teach you the principles of data visualization, building the foundations needed to work with data to make smarter decisions. You will learn how to address business challenges through exploratory data analysis (EDA), and practice these techniques in hands-on labs using R and open source visualization libraries. (No experience with R programming required.) Finally, you will learn data storytelling techniques to communicate data-driven insights to others, driving action and change.

Data-driven decision-making is no longer the exclusive domain of elite data scientists. By the end of this intensive three-day program, you will have built and practiced the skills that you need to solve problems using data.

Attend all three days and earn a certificate.

  • Monday, May 8

Data visualization has rapidly become a critical part of business analytics and business communications. Without visualization, the numbers and statistics of analytics are difficult to interpret and incomprehensible to many who need to turn data into knowledge. The advent of big data, with the increasing volume and velocity of data, requires visualization as a technique to compress large volumes of data into digestible presentations and to observe streaming data in motion.

  • Tuesday, May 9

Although most people are familiar with data visualization in the context of business intelligence dashboards, this is only the tip of the iceberg. In this hands-on course, you will learn to use visualizations the way data scientists use them—to get to the “why” of what’s going on in the business.

In this course, you will learn to use visualizations such as histograms, scatter plots, and box plots to perform exploratory data analysis (EDA). EDA is not only a fundamental skill for data analysts/scientists, it’s also a fundamental skill for any data-literate professional.

  • Wednesday, May 10

The explosion of data has made data visualization a core competency for organizations as insights can no longer be derived from rows and columns. Analytical insights start and end with the story and storytelling skills are essential for understanding the message and gaining value from the data. Storytelling involves understanding the message, understanding the audience, and crafting the visuals to deliver insights to stakeholders.
