A good visual tells a story. The key to displaying quantitative data in a memorable and productive way is to enable the audience to develop a deep and intuitive understanding of it. Summary statistics allow us to distill complex information derived from data using just a few key numbers. They are useful in that they yield key metrics we can use to optimize decisions. The danger comes from relying solely on summary statistics and ignoring the overall context in which decisions get made, from allowing the data to overwhelm the audience, and from the potential pitfalls of letting form dictate function. In this session, I'll discuss how to build a quantitative story and tell it with data.
