As an increasing number of companies migrate to cloud platforms to modernize their enterprise data and analytics architecture, many are realizing that the undertaking is more than they anticipated. The size and complexity of integrated data architectures require a comprehensive cloud migration strategy to be set for data architecture beforehand. The best cloud migration strategies balance and coordinate developing the necessary cloud skills and experience, an incremental adoption of modern data architecture components and technologies, and evaluating the vast landscape of modern architecture patterns for cloud services and data infrastructure. These organizational, process, and technology considerations represent more than a migration initiative; they comprise a transformational strategy.

With a solid vision of the architecture’s target state, the migration plan must tackle several foundational questions, including whether to replatform or refactor the architecture, whether to adopt cloud-native principles, how much automation is appropriate, and which managed services will be most beneficial. It is also necessary to balance trade-offs of cloud-managed services with open architecture principles required for architecture portability in hybrid and multicloud architecture scenarios.

This talk will cover key strategic decisions and explain these foundational considerations, drawing upon research of industry trends and experiences from several companies migrating to AWS, Azure, and GCP.
