Information Consumer Empowerment: A Modernized Perspective on Data Governance

September 7, 2023

Prerequisite: None

David Loshin

President

Knowledge Integrity

Despite the acknowledged benefits of instituting data governance practices to monitor the quality and success of enterprise data, the term “governance” has a negative connotation that implies imposition of overbearing oversight and constraints on system development and implementation. Yet organizations are faced with increased scrutiny for compliance and managing concerns about cybersecurity events and data breaches. Controls are necessary to ensure that information consumers are afforded timely access to measurably high-quality data sets that they are authorized to use within the contexts of their business process needs. In essence data governance methods and technologies are about enabling data use and empowering information consumers, rather than constraining them.

In this talk, David Loshin will explore the modernization of data governance and how the collection of data policy management practices (such as identity management and access control, data protection, and regulatory compliance) can be complemented with data enablement methods (such as data virtualization, data fabric, and data pipelines) to empower information consumers. Attendees will learn about:

  • The evolution of data governance as an enabling set of practices
  • Data provision consistent with data protection
  • Consumer-driven data configuration
  • Integrated controls for compliance, protection, and data quality
  • Operationalizing data policies
