Automated Machine Learning: Opportunities and Pitfalls

December 3, 2020

10:00 am - 10:40 am

Prerequisite: None

Fern Halper, Ph.D.

VP and Sr. Research Director

TDWI

Machine learning is hot. According to TDWI research, demand for machine learning continues to grow.  Yet, data scientists are often in short supply.  To scale machine learning, many vendors are offering "autoML" software that helps business analysts and even business users construct machine learning models.  All the user needs to do is specify the outcome or target variable of interest along with the attributes believed to be predictive. The software picks the best model.

Some tools are even more automated. In many ways, this is the epitome of self-service analytics—a piece of software that creates a machine learning model!

However, with great power comes great responsibility. It would be irresponsible to simply create an autoML model and put it into production. In this presentation, Fern Halper, TDWI's VP of Research, will discuss what autoML is all about, how organizations plan to use the technology, and best practices for success.
