Historically, business users were content to view reports based on data that was loaded to a physical data warehouse. Over the past few years the nature and location of data being requested has evolved. Relational data is still stored in transactional systems but business users also need JSON or XML data from IoT devices, NoSQL databases and Graph databases to name a few, any of which could be cloud or on premises-based.
Data Warehouses built solely leveraging traditional ETL and relational database technologies haven't been able to keep up with these demands leading to the advent of the Logical Data Warehouse (LDW). At the core of the LDW is Data Virtualization technology.
