Abstract

A few years ago, first generation data warehouse appliances emerged with a focus on purpose-built server hardware and BI software, pre-integrated into a single package. Over time, however, the data warehouse appliance’s focus on hardware has faded, as its vendors found that non-standard and single-use hardware are leading barriers to appliance adoption. The next generation of data warehouse appliances is shifting toward specialized software that can be deployed on certified hardware from leading server, network, and storage vendors. This way, users get the benefits of fast queries and low costs – which data warehouse appliances are famous for – but on familiar hardware infrastructure (possibly commodity priced) from leading vendors.
