An Overview of Federation and how it is used today

    Abstract

Data application architects are under great pressure to deliver data to decision makers faster than ever before and at less cost. Many data managers are turning to data federation middleware as an important tool in today’s data integration portfolio to serve users’ critical information by querying and joining data from multiple sources on the fly. In the federation software solution, a virtual database is created that does not contain the data itself. Instead, it contains information about the actual data and its location. A key issue is whether data federation technology should be used in place of a data warehouse to save on the costs associated with creating a permanent, physical database or it whether federation should be considered as an enhancement. Since this allows the person performing the analysis to aggregate and organize data quickly without having to request synchronization logic or copy the data until it's absolutely necessary, we pose the question: is federation an innovative solution or a journey down a winding path?

    Key Questions to Explore:

    • What does a federated architecture look like?
    • When to use federation? When not to?
    • How have newer technologies changed the usage of data federation?
    • Are large Enterprise Data Warehouses a thing of the past?
    • What are the advantages of using federation?
    • What are the challenges of using federation?
    • What are some of the key vendors in the space?
